Reward types

Every reward rule in Toki grants exactly one thing: a set number of points, a discount code, a free gift, and so on. The Type field in the rule decides what that is, and each type brings its own settings. This article walks through every type and what it does.

Pick a type

  1. In the merchant portal, open Loyalty and pick a reward in the Ways to Earn section — or open a redemption option.
  2. In the reward rule, choose a Type.
  3. Fill in the fields that appear for that type and click Save.

You can switch the type at any point. Toki keeps what it can from your current setup and fills in sensible starting values — for example, choosing Buy X Get Y starts you at "buy 1, get 1 free."

The types at a glance

TypeWhat the customer gets
Fixed amountA set amount of your store credit. The option is labeled with your credit's name — for example, "Fixed amount of Points."
Based on spendPoints for every unit of currency spent — cashback.
Free giftOne or more products, free.
Discount codeA discount code: a fixed amount off, a percentage off, Buy X Get Y, or fully custom logic.
Free shippingA free shipping discount code.
CollectibleA named collectible with an image.
CustomAnything you describe in text and fulfill yourself.
TremendousA digital gift card through the Tremendous integration.
Without rewardNothing — but the completion is still recorded.
InactiveNothing at all. The rule acts as if it doesn't exist.

The list you see depends on where you're editing:

  • Earning rewards offer fixed amounts, free gifts, discount codes, collectibles, and custom rewards.
  • Based on spend appears for purchase, spend, referral, receipt-upload, and paid membership rewards.
  • Redemption options offer free shipping, free gifts, discount codes, collectibles, and custom rewards.
  • Tiers and paid memberships add perk types of their own, like free shipping and gated access.
  • Tremendous appears once the Tremendous integration is installed.
  • Spin wheel and lottery rewards add their own extras — see special reward types below.

Fixed amount

The simplest type: the customer earns a set amount of store credit.

SettingWhat it does
AmountHow much the customer earns.
Store creditWhich store credit to grant. This selector appears when you run more than one store credit.

For quizzes set to reward each correct answer, the amount is granted per correct answer — 10 points and 3 correct answers means 30 points. A banner on the page reminds you of this.

Based on spend

Cashback: the customer earns points in proportion to what they spend.

SettingWhat it does
Amount per $1 spentHow many points each unit of your store currency earns.
Store creditWhich store credit to grant, when you have more than one.
Use subtotal for cashbackUnder Additional settings. Calculates cashback on the order subtotal instead of the order total.

Free gift

The customer receives products for free.

SettingWhat it does
Product VariantThe products the gift includes. A free gift can include up to 100 product variants.
Code prefixA prefix for the generated gift code.
Expiration typeWhen the gift expires — see expiration below.

For redemption options, free gifts also have combination settings — see discounts and how they combine.

Discount code

The customer receives a discount code. First choose the discount's Type:

TypeWhat it does
AbsoluteA fixed amount off, in your store currency.
PercentageA percentage off.
Buy X Get YThe customer buys qualifying items and gets other items discounted or free.
DynamicFully custom discount logic, beyond the preset types.

For Absolute and Percentage, set the Amount and, if you want, Minimum purchase requirements: no minimum, a Minimum purchase amount, or a Minimum quantity of items.

Buy X Get Y

Three blocks define the offer:

  1. Customer buys — what qualifies: a Minimum quantity of items or a Minimum purchase amount, from the collections you select under Any items from.
  2. Customer gets — the quantity of discounted items and the collections they come from.
  3. At a discounted valuePercentage off, an Amount off each, or Free.

Dynamic

Dynamic discounts let you build discount logic the preset types don't cover — for example, tiered discounts based on cart value ("10% off $50+, 15% off $100+") or different rates for different products in the same cart. They're available for redemption options, tiers, memberships, and workflows. This is an advanced setup — chat with us and we'll build it with you.

Other discount settings

SettingWhat it does
Code prefixA prefix for the generated discount codes.
Create discount immediatelyCreates the discount code right when the reward is granted.
Expiration typeWhen the code expires — see expiration below.
CollectionsUnder Additional discount rules. Restricts the discount to specific collections; leave blank to apply it to all products.

Expiration

Discount codes and free gifts share the same expiration options:

OptionWhat it does
UnlimitedThe reward never expires.
RelativeExpires a set time after the reward is created.
AbsoluteExpires on a specific date and time you pick.
End of periodExpires at the end of the current Week, Month, or Year, at the Expiration time (UTC) you choose.

End of period creates a rolling schedule: a monthly reward earned on November 15 expires at the end of November. "Use it by the end of the month" is easy for customers to remember.

Discounts and how they combine

Discount codes, free shipping, and free gifts share a set of switches that control how they interact with other discounts and with subscriptions:

SettingWhat it does
Custom discount combination settingsLets this discount combine with Product discounts, Order discounts, and Shipping discounts.
Custom subscription discount settingsFor recurring subscription payments: limit the discount to the first payment, to a set number of payments, or apply it to all payments.
Custom discount purchase settingsScopes the discount to One-time purchase, Subscription, or Both.

Free shipping

Available for redemption options, tiers, and memberships. The customer receives a free shipping code.

SettingWhat it does
Shipping ratesCaps the reward: exclude shipping rates over a certain amount.
Minimum requirementsRequires a minimum purchase amount before free shipping applies.
Code prefixA prefix for the generated code.
CountriesApplies free shipping to All countries or only Selected countries.

Free shipping also supports the combination, subscription, and purchase-type settings described above.

Collectible

A collectible is a named item with an image that customers collect. Give it a Name and upload an Image.

Custom

A custom reward is whatever you want it to be — you describe it, and you fulfill it yourself. For redemption options and memberships you can also check Is redeemable and set a Message after redemption that customers see once they redeem it.

Tremendous

With the Tremendous integration installed, you can reward digital gift cards.

SettingWhat it does
AmountThe gift card value.
ProductsWhich gift cards the customer can receive.
Back based on spend (i.e. cashback)For purchase-based rewards: scales the gift card with what the customer spent.

Without reward and Inactive

Two options for turning a rule's payout off:

  • Without reward — the customer receives nothing, but Toki still records the activity completion. Useful when you want the action tracked without a payout.
  • Inactive — no reward and no record, as if no matching rule was found.

Special reward types

Some activities come with settings and reward types of their own.

Spin wheel

Each rule on a spin wheel is a wheel segment:

  • Drop rate — the percentage chance of landing on this segment.
  • X Bet Multiplier — an extra reward type that multiplies the customer's bet on that spin. Set the Multiplier.

Lottery

  • Ticket Price — what one ticket costs.
  • Limit per user — how many tickets each customer can buy.
  • Total Pool — an extra reward type where the winner takes the entire pool.

Charity donations

Customers donate their points to causes you choose:

  • Minimum Amount and Maximum Amount — the donation range.
  • Add charity — build the list customers pick from. Each entry has a Charity name and Charity description.

Environmental impact

With the Greenspark integration, customers can spend points on environmental projects like planting trees. You pick the projects and set how many points each contribution costs.

Name your reward

Toki generates a customer-facing name for every reward rule automatically. To use your own, open Additional settings in the rule and fill in Name — leave it blank to keep the generated one.
