Import reviews

Switching to Toki from another reviews platform? You don't have to start from zero. Export your reviews as a CSV, upload it into a review group, and Toki brings the reviews over with their ratings, text, dates, reviewer names, and replies. Imported reviews then behave like any other review in Toki: you moderate them, they show on your product pages, and they appear in your Google Shopping feed.

Before you start

  • Export your reviews from your current platform as a CSV file. Toki reads the export formats of Yotpo, Judge.me, Stamped.io, and Klaviyo.
  • Make sure you have at least one review group. The Import reviews button appears on the Reviews page once a group exists. See Review groups.
  • Files up to 10 MB are accepted. Comma-separated and semicolon-separated files both work.

Supported platforms and required columns

Each platform has its own column names. Toki looks for the columns below and uses the platform's own status column to decide whether a review goes live right away.

PlatformRequired columnsImported as Approved when
YotpoReview ID, Review Score, Review Content, Reviewer Email, Product IDReview Status is Published
Judge.memetaobject_handle, rating, body, reviewer_email, product_idcurated is ok
Stamped.ioid, rating, body, email, product_idpublished is published
Klaviyoreview_id, rating, review_content, reviewer_email, product_idstatus is published or featured

Every other review imports as Pending, including rows where the status column is empty or missing, so you can check them before they show in your store.

A few rules apply to every row:

  • The product ID is the product's Shopify product ID, as shown in the template.
  • Ratings are whole numbers from 1 to 5.
  • The reviewer email must be a valid email address, and the review text can't be empty.
  • Keep the column names exactly as they are in the template.

Everything else in the template is optional. Toki uses these columns when they are filled in:

Other optional columns in the templates, such as the product name or handle, featured and recommended flags, and sentiment scores, are stored with the review as import details.

Import the file

  1. In the Toki app, click Reviews in the left navigation.

  2. Click Import reviews at the top of the Reviews page. The Import reviews page opens.

  3. Under Platform, choose the platform you are moving from: Yotpo, Judge.me, Stamped.io, or Klaviyo.

  4. Under Review group, choose the group the reviews should belong to.

  5. Under CSV File, click Download template if you want to see the exact columns for the selected platform. The template has the column names and one example row.

  6. Drag your CSV into the upload area, or click the area to pick the file. The upload takes one file at a time. To swap it, drop another file and it replaces the first.

  7. Check the two lists that appear below the upload area. Expected Columns shows what Toki looks for on the selected platform, and Detected Columns shows what it found in your file:

    MarkerMeaning
    [OK]Column found.
[X]Required column not found in your file.
[ ]Optional column not in your file. That's fine.
[?]A column in your file that Toki doesn't expect for this platform. Handy for spotting typos.

If a required column is not found, Toki shows "Required columns were not found. The file must contain review, author, and product identifiers." Fix the file and upload it again before you continue.

  8. Click Start Import.

Toki checks every row and confirms with Import queued. You see Total rows, Queued rows, and Rows failed validation, plus a Skipped count when a Judge.me file contains rows without a product ID. Rows that fail validation (for example, a rating of 7 or a reviewer email that isn't a valid address) are counted and the rest of the file still imports. The queued rows are processed in the background, so you don't need to stay on the page.

What happens to each review

Reviewer. Toki matches the reviewer to a customer by email. If nobody with that email exists in Toki yet, Toki adds them as a new member using the name from the file.

Status and date. The review gets the Approved or Pending status from the table above and keeps its original review date when the file has one.

Verified purchase. If the row has an order ID or order number, Toki links the review to that order. If it doesn't, Toki looks for an order by the same customer that includes the product and was placed on or before the review date, and links the most recent one. A review linked to an order shows the Verified buyer badge in your store. The badge always comes from this order link; a verified column in a Stamped.io or Klaviyo file is stored with the review as an import detail.

Replies. A reply from your team in the file is added to the review, as long as the review has no replies in Toki yet. Replies that already exist are never overwritten.

Reviewer country. Toki recognizes two-letter country codes (such as US) and country names (such as United States, USA, or United Kingdom) and shows the reviewer's country flag next to their name on your storefront.

Product variant. For Klaviyo files, a filled-in product_variant_id links the review to that variant of the product.

Photos and videos. Picture and video links from the file are stored with the review as import details, like the other optional columns.

Running the same import twice

Toki remembers which platform and review ID each imported review came from. If you upload the same export again, or a newer export from the same platform, rows with a review ID Toki already has update the existing review (rating, text, status, and details) instead of creating a copy. The Previous imports panel counts those rows as Updated.

Track the import

The Previous imports panel sits next to the form and updates automatically every few seconds. Each import shows:

  • The date and time it started, with an In progress or Completed badge.
  • A progress bar.
  • Platform and Group.
  • Total, Created, and, when they apply, Updated, Skipped, and Failed counts.

An import is Completed once every row has been created, updated, skipped, or failed.

After the import

  • Imported reviews appear in the review group's moderation list with their status. Approve the pending ones there, the same way you handle reviews written in your store. See Review moderation.
  • Reviews on your product pages refresh a few minutes after each product's rows are processed.
  • If you use the Google Shopping reviews feed, imported reviews keep their original review ID in the feed.
  • Toki also updates each reviewer's list of reviewed products, which it shares with your connected integrations such as Klaviyo.
  • Importing is quiet. Reviews that arrive as Approved don't grant review rewards or send review events to your integrations, so bringing over your history never hands out points. When you approve an imported pending review in Toki later, that approval works like any other and can grant a reward.
