Tier conditions and member limit
Conditions decide which customers qualify for a membership tier. You can stack several conditions, connect them with AND or OR, and give each one a time window — for example, "spent $500 in the last 12 months." You can also cap how many customers hold the tier with a member limit.
Where you set conditions
- Open Loyalty in the left navigation.
- In the VIP Tiers section, click a tier to edit it (or click Add new tier to create one).
- Scroll to the conditions area of the tier editor. Each condition starts with a Condition type selector.
You also set conditions during guided setup — the onboarding wizard includes an unlock-conditions step that uses the same options described here.
Add and remove conditions
- To add a condition, click the button below your last condition. It's labeled with your current connector (AND or OR), and its hover text reads Add new condition.
- Pick a Condition type, then fill in the fields that appear for that type.
- To remove a condition, click Delete condition under it.
Condition types
| Condition type | Who qualifies |
|---|---|
| Activity | Customers who complete the selected activity a set number of times. |
| Store credit balance | Customers whose current balance (credits earned minus credits spent) meets the amount you set. |
| Cumulative store credit | Customers whose total earned credits meet the amount you set. |
| Maintained store credit | Customers whose highest-ever balance meets the amount you set. |
| Redeemed store credit | Customers who have redeemed the specified points. |
| Spent amount | Customers who have spent the specified amount in your store. |
| Referral spent amount | Customers whose referred shoppers have spent the specified total amount. |
| Number of orders | Customers who have placed the specified number of orders. |
| Customer tags | Customers with the specified Shopify tags. Enter one tag per line. |
| Specific customers | Customers on an email list you provide. Enter one email per line. |
| Joined program | Customers who have joined your loyalty program. |
| Paid membership | Customers who hold the selected paid membership. |
| Klaviyo segment | Customers in the selected Klaviyo segment or list. Klaviyo lists sync once per hour, so a brand-new segment can take up to an hour to appear. |
| Time in segment | Customers who have held the tier (or been in a segment) for the time you set — useful for requiring sustained loyalty before customers move up. |
| Nested condition group | A group of conditions with its own AND/OR connector (see below). |
A few types come with extra choices:
- Comparisons. Number of orders, Redeemed store credit, and Referral spent amount include an Expression selector: More than, Less than, More than or equal to, Less than or equal to, or Equal to.
- Customer tags strategy. Choose AND to require every tag you listed, or OR to require at least one of them.
- Activity answers. For activities that collect answers (like forms and quizzes), an Answer matching setting lets you count Any answer or only Specific answers you pick with Add filter.
If a Paid Membership condition appears inside a tier automatically, Toki manages it for you — the editor shows "You cannot edit it directly."
Time windows
Most condition types include a time window, so you can count activity from a specific period instead of all time.
| Option | What it counts |
|---|---|
| Over all time | Everything, with no date restriction. |
| In the last | The last N days, months, or years. |
| Between dates | Activity between two dates you pick. |
| Since date | Activity from a date onward. |
| Until date | Activity up to a date. |
| Older than | Activity older than N days, months, or years. |
| Since last year | Activity since last year. |
| Since join or cutoff | Since the customer joined, or within the last N days/months/years — whichever is shorter. |
| Since annual date | Since a month and day that repeats every year (for example, since January 1). |
| Since joining the Loyalty program | Everything since the customer joined your loyalty program. |
Combine conditions with AND / OR
Between conditions you'll see a divider with a small and / or selector. Pick and to require every condition, or or to let any single condition qualify a customer. The connector you pick applies between all conditions at that level.
For rules that mix both, add a Nested condition group:
- Set Condition type to Nested condition group. A Nested Conditions Group box appears.
- Click Add nested condition to add conditions inside the group. The group has its own and / or connector, independent of the top level.
- Click Delete group to remove the whole group.
Groups support one level of nesting: the top level plus groups of regular conditions inside it. That's enough for rules like "(spent $500 and placed 10 orders) or holds a specific tag."
Member limit
Cap how many customers can hold the tier:
- In the tier editor, turn on the Member Limit switch.
- Enter the maximum number of members.
Turn the switch off to remove the cap.
