AI review summaries

Toki can write a short, AI-generated summary of what customers say about a product, based on its approved reviews. Shoppers see it in the reviews widget on the product page under the heading Customers say, so they get the gist before scrolling through individual reviews. You turn summaries on per review group, and you can read every summary Toki has written in the Toki app.

Turn on summaries for a review group

Summaries are off for new groups. Turn them on for each group whose reviews should feed them.

  1. In the Toki app, click Reviews in the left navigation.
  2. If you have more than one review group, click the group's tab at the top of the page.
  3. In the Settings card, click Edit.
  4. On the group's edit page, find the Settings card (the one with the group's Name) and turn on Generate product review summary.
  5. Click Save in the bar at the top of the page.

Back on the Reviews page, the Settings card now shows Product summary as On.

The group also needs Show group on storefront turned on (in the Widget card of the same edit page). Only groups shown on the storefront contribute reviews to summaries. See Review groups.

Which reviews count

For each product, Toki pools:

  • Approved reviews only. Pending and rejected reviews stay out. See Review moderation.
  • Reviews from every group with the switch on that is also shown on the storefront. If two groups qualify, their reviews are combined.
  • Reviews from the whole product group. If the product belongs to a product group, reviews of its sibling products count too, and each product in the group gets its own summary built from the shared reviews.

Toki writes the summary from reviews that include text: a headline, review body, pros, or cons. Reviews that only carry a star rating still appear in the product's Reviews count, but the summary is written from the reviews with text.

When a summary is written or refreshed

RuleWhat it means
First summaryA product needs at least 10 approved reviews with text.
Reviews usedToki reads the 50 most recent reviews with text.
RefreshAn existing summary is rewritten once it is at least 7 days old and at least 5 reviews with text have arrived that are newer than the ones it covered.

Toki checks once a day for products that meet these rules and writes or refreshes their summaries. Until then, the current summary stays in place.

Two more things to know:

  • Toki publishes a summary only when the reviews contain feedback about the product itself. If the reviews only talk about shipping or customer service, the product is checked again on a later run.
  • Products that have been deleted from your Shopify store are skipped.

Summaries are written and refreshed for you. If you need one refreshed sooner, chat with us and we'll take care of it.

What the summary says

Toki writes every summary to a strict brief:

  • One plain paragraph of two sentences, three at most.
  • About the product itself: fit, feel, materials, appearance, construction, performance, and durability. It uses only details that appear in the reviews.
  • Built on themes that repeat across reviews. A concern is included only when several reviews report the same issue independently; one-off incidents are left out.
  • Faithful to the overall tone. Mixed or negative feedback is kept as is and is not softened into a recommendation.
  • Store-wide topics are excluded: shipping, delivery, packaging, customer service, returns, stock, and marketing emails.
  • No shopping advice, sizing tips, or promotional language.

The paragraph never opens with "Customers say" because that heading is already shown above it in the widget.

What shoppers see

In the reviews widget on the product page, below the overall rating and the star breakdown, shoppers see a Customers say section. It carries the note "AI-generated from customer reviews." followed by the summary paragraph.

The section appears when the product has a summary and at least one review group shown on the storefront has Generate product review summary turned on. Turn the switch off in every group and the section leaves the storefront; the summaries stay listed in the Toki app.

Browse your summaries

On the Reviews page, the Product summaries card sits below the Settings card. It lists every summary across all your review groups, most recently updated first, ten per page. Use the arrows under the list to move between pages.

Type in Search by product ID or summary to find a product by its ID or by words that appear in its summary.

Click a row to open the Product summary window. It shows the full text along with Product, Reviews, Summarized reviews (how many reviews with text Toki read to write it), and Updated. Click Close to return to the list.

Until a product qualifies, the card reads No product review summaries yet.
