Custom review questions

A star rating and a few sentences only tell shoppers so much. Custom review questions let you ask structured questions when a customer writes a review: how it fits, how it tastes, whether it was worth the price. You build the questions as review forms inside a review group, decide which products each form applies to, and choose how the answers show up on your storefront.

How review forms work

  • Each review group can have several review forms. A review form is a set of questions you build in the form builder.
  • By default a form applies to every product the group covers. Turn on Limit to matching products to show it only for products that match your rules, so an apparel group can ask about fit on clothing and about taste on snacks without separate groups.
  • Customers answer every form that applies to the product they are reviewing. When several forms apply, their questions appear one after another inside the review form, in the order of your forms list. Customers see only the questions, not the form names.
  • Answers are saved with the review and shown with it on your storefront. You also see them in the review details, and you can show them as aggregated results and filters.

Add a review form

  1. Open Reviews and select the tab of the review group you want to change.
  2. In the Settings card, click Edit. To start a new group instead, click Create group.
  3. Scroll to the Custom questions section and click Add review form. A form named New form appears in the list.
  4. Enter a Form name so you can tell your forms apart.
  5. Click Edit to open the form builder. Add and arrange your questions, then click Done to return to the group.
  6. Save the group.

Under each form, Toki shows how many questions it contains. Text blocks are not counted as questions.

To manage the list:

ActionHow
Copy a formClick Duplicate. The copy is added at the end of the list with (copy) after its name, including its questions and product rules.
Reorder formsDrag a form by its handle.
Remove a formClick the trash icon next to the form.

Limit a form to certain products

  1. In the Custom questions section, turn on Limit to matching products for the form.
  2. Open Included products and add rules: Include specific products, Include product types (one per line), Include product tags (separated by commas), or Include product collections.
  3. Open Excluded products to keep specific products, types, tags, or collections out, even if they match an included rule.
  4. Save the group.

A product matches when it meets any included rule, excluded rules always take priority, and empty included fields match every product that is not excluded. These are the same rules as for review eligibility, so see Review eligibility for the details of how products are matched.

A badge on Included products and Excluded products shows how many rules you have added. Toki reads product types, tags, and collections from your Shopify admin; changes you make there can take up to five minutes to apply to review forms.

Question settings specific to reviews

The form builder is the same one you use elsewhere in Toki. Under Add new fields it offers Single choice, Multiple choice, Text input, Date input, and File input questions, plus Text block for explanatory text between questions. Under Form settings, Form style decides whether a form shows all its questions at once (Single form) or one at a time with Back and Next buttons (Carousel). When you open the builder from a review group, a few extra options appear.

Show a question only for some products or answers

Open a question's settings, click Add visibility condition, and pick what the condition is Based on:

Based onWhat it does
QuestionShow this question only when another question in the same form is answered with the values you pick. For example, ask "What size do you usually wear?" only after a customer answers "Runs small".
ProductShow this question only for products that match Included products and Excluded products rules. The rules work exactly like the form-level rules above.

Click Remove visibility condition to show the question to everyone again. Answers to questions that end up hidden are cleared before the review is saved.

Scale questions

For a single choice question, set Options type to Scale to show the options as a horizontal scale (for example 1 to 5). A Scale display setting then appears and decides how the aggregated result looks on your storefront:

Scale displayWhat shoppers see in the review summary
Position markerA marker placed at the average position along the scale, for example between "Runs small" and "True to size".
ScoreThe average as a number, for example 3.8 out of 5.

Each question can also be marked Required.

Preview questions for a specific product

In the form builder, the Form preview panel has a Preview product selector. Choose a product to see exactly which questions a customer reviewing that product would get, taking product rules and visibility conditions into account.

Storefront settings

These settings sit at the top of the Custom questions section and apply to all forms in the group.

SettingWhat it does
Custom question placementBefore the main review fields shows your questions above the rating, headline, and review text. After the main review fields (the default) shows them below.
Show aggregated question resultsOff by default. When on, the storefront review summary shows combined answers for choice questions, such as the average fit score.
Show question filtersOff by default. When on, customers can filter a product's reviews by the answers to choice questions shown for that product.

These two settings add summaries and filters. Independently of them, every published review shows the customer's own answers below the review text: a scale question as a marker or score, other questions as the question with its answer, and uploaded files as thumbnails.

How aggregated results work

  • Results are built only for single choice and multiple choice questions with at least two options, and only once a question has answers.
  • A product's summary includes only the forms and questions that apply to that product.
  • Multiple choice questions show the most selected option. Single choice questions show one summary option, unless they use a scale, in which case the Scale display setting decides between a position marker and a score.

Where answers appear in Toki

  • Open a review from the Reviews page to see its answers in the Custom questions section of the Review details window.
  • Use the Custom questions filter on the Reviews page to find reviews by their answers. See Browse and filter reviews.
