Notification channels

Every campaign sends its message through one or more channels: a push notification to the customer's wallet pass, an email, or a wallet notification. You turn each channel on or off on its own, so one campaign can use any combination. This article explains what each channel does, who receives it, and what you need to write.

The three channels

ChannelWho receives itWhat you write
Push notificationCustomers in the audience who have your wallet pass in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.Push notification content
EmailCustomers in the audience who have an email address on file.Email subject and Email message
Wallet notificationEvery customer in the audience.Wallet notification title and Wallet notification body

The audience is the segment you pick in Segment, or all customers if you leave it empty. A customer who qualifies for more than one channel gets the message on each channel you turned on.

Turn a channel on or off

  1. Click Campaigns in the left navigation, then open a campaign or click Create campaign.
  2. Under Notification Settings, check the box for the channel: Enable push notifications, Enable email notifications, or Enable wallet notifications. The channel's text fields appear below the box.
  3. Fill in every field for that channel.
  4. Click Save.

Each channel you turn on needs its text before the campaign can save. If a field is empty, Toki shows a message such as "Please fix: Please enter email subject" so you know what to complete.

To turn a channel off, uncheck its box. Toki keeps the text you wrote, so you can turn the channel back on later without retyping.

Push notifications

A push notification shows up on the customer's phone through your wallet pass. It reaches customers who have added your pass to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, which makes it a direct line to your most engaged customers. To reach the rest of your audience, turn on email as well.

Write the message in Push notification content. Keep it short: customers read it at a glance on their phone.

The Pushes sent column on the Campaigns page counts the push notifications each campaign has sent.

Email

Turn on Enable email notifications and write an Email subject and an Email message. Toki sends the email to every customer in the audience who has an email address on file.

Emails come from an address at buildwithtoki.com built from your Merchant Name, with spaces replaced by underscores. For example, a Merchant Name of "Acme Coffee" sends from Acme_Coffee@buildwithtoki.com. To check or change your Merchant Name, click Settings in the left navigation, open the Merchant tab, and look under Merchant Settings.

Wallet notifications

Turn on Enable wallet notifications and write a Wallet notification title and a Wallet notification body. Toki saves the notification for every customer in the audience, whether or not they have your wallet pass on their phone.

If you later delete the campaign and check Also delete all notifications associated with this campaign, these wallet notifications are removed as well. See Campaigns for the delete steps.

Personalize the text

For Automatically campaigns, picking an action under When to send fills in starter text for every channel field that is still empty. The starter text may include placeholders in double curly braces, such as {{amount}} or {{membership_name}}. When Toki sends the campaign, it replaces each placeholder with that customer's real value. Placeholders work in every channel field: push content, email subject and message, and wallet title and body. Keep them, move them, or delete them as you edit. For the placeholders each action supports, see Message placeholders and starter text.

Preview and test each channel

  1. Open the campaign and click Test.
  2. In the Test Campaign window, check Notification Preview. It shows a block for each channel you turned on, Push Notification, Email Notification, and Wallet Notification, with the text you entered.
  3. In Users, search by email and select one or more customers.
  4. Click Send Test.

The Test Result tells you how the send went. For push, it reports Apple Wallet and Google Wallet separately. Pick a test customer who has your wallet pass on their phone; if none of the selected customers has one, the result reads "No devices found for selected users". To test email, choose a customer with an email address on file.
