Storefront language

The Language setting controls which language the Toki modules on your storefront display in — everything your customers see from Toki while they shop. Pick one language for every visitor, let Toki choose automatically, or have Toki read the language from the address of the page the visitor is on.

Where to find it

1. Open Design.
2. The language settings are in the first card at the top of the Design Settings page, above your list of modules.

Language options

The Language menu offers three kinds of choices.

Supported languages

You can choose any of these languages, listed in the order they appear in the Language menu:

English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Romanian, Polish, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Portuguese, Catalan, Czech, Slovak, Slovenian, Croatian, Lithuanian, Estonian, Latvian, and Hungarian.

The same languages are available as the Default language in page-based mode, and each has its own URL Regex field.

Set one language for everyone

1. Open Design.
2. In Language, choose the language you want.
3. Click Save in the bar that appears at the top of the page.

Toki confirms with the message Language settings saved.

Pick the language from the page address

Page-based mode is for stores that publish in more than one language, where the page address tells you which language the visitor is browsing in. You give Toki one pattern per language. When a visitor opens a page, Toki checks the page address against your patterns and shows the modules in the matching language.

1. Open Design.
2. In Language, choose Page-based. The Page-based Language Settings section opens below the menu.
3. Choose a Default language. Toki uses it whenever a page address matches none of your patterns.
4. For each language your store publishes in, fill in its URL Regex field — for example French URL Regex for your French pages. Enter a regular expression that matches the addresses of your pages in that language. Leave the field empty for languages you don't use.
5. Click Save.

Writing a matching pattern is a technical task. If you're not sure what to enter, chat with us and we'll set it up with you.

Show or hide the settings

The Page-based Language Settings section has a Show / Hide button. Hiding the section tidies up the page without changing any of your patterns.

Choose which language fields you see

By default, the section shows the URL Regex fields for English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. To work with other languages:

1. With the section open, click Languages.
2. Check the languages you want to see, and uncheck the ones you don't. Languages are listed by their two-letter code, for example PL for Polish.

This only changes which fields are displayed. Hiding a language keeps the pattern you entered for it, and the pattern stays active after you save. Toki remembers your choice for this store in the browser you're using, so it applies to you only.

Save or discard changes

As soon as you change any language setting, a bar appears at the top of the page. Click Save to apply your changes to your storefront, or Discard to go back to the saved settings.

When you edit a module's design, the preview shows the module in the language you've set here:

Customize translations

The Customize translations link at the bottom of the language card opens the translations page, where you can change the wording Toki uses in each language. See Customize translations.
