Paid memberships
A paid membership is a membership your customers buy. They pay monthly, quarterly, annually, or once — and in return they get the rewards you attach to the membership. Toki backs each paid membership with a product in your Shopify store, complete with the purchase options for the billing frequencies you sell.
Paid memberships are part of our paid plans — open Billing anytime to review or upgrade your plan.
Create a paid membership
- Open Loyalty in the left navigation.
- Scroll to the VIP Tiers section and click Add new tier.
- On the Create membership page, choose Paid Membership.
- Pick the billing frequencies you want to sell, set a price for each, and add rewards.
- Click Save.
Toki also creates a segment named Membership: [your membership's name], so you can target members in campaigns and workflows.
To edit a paid membership later, open Loyalty and click it in the VIP Tiers list. Use the status selector to keep it in Draft while you build, then switch it to Active when you're ready to sell.
Billing frequencies
Turn each frequency on or off independently. Every enabled frequency gets its own price and its own tracking tags.
| Frequency | How customers pay |
|---|---|
| Monthly | Recurring charge every month. |
| Quarterly | Recurring charge every three months. |
| Annually | Recurring charge every year. |
| Lifetime | One-time purchase. Grants access indefinitely, or for a set number of days if you make it limited-time (see below). |
For each enabled frequency you set:
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Price | What the customer pays per billing cycle (or once, for Lifetime). |
| Tracking: tags | Tags added to the customer's profile in Shopify when they buy this frequency. Separate multiple tags with commas. |
Trials
Each recurring frequency (Monthly, Quarterly, Annually) can offer a trial. Turn on the Trial switch under the frequency and fill in both fields:
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Duration | Number of days for the trial period. |
| First Payment | Price for the first payment. Set it to 0 for a free trial. |
Both fields are required when the trial is on.
Lifetime and limited-time memberships
The Lifetime frequency is a single payment instead of a subscription. By default, access never expires.
To sell time-boxed access instead, turn on the Limited-Time Membership switch under the Lifetime option and set the Access Duration (days) — the number of days the customer has access to membership benefits after purchase (365 by default). Once the access period ends, the customer must purchase again to regain access. When the switch is on, the frequency option shows as Limited-Time.
Limited-time memberships work well for season passes, launch-window access, or gifts — one payment, a clear end date, and a natural reason to come back.
Market Based Pricing
Market Based Pricing prices the membership per market through Shopify Markets, so each region sees the price in its local currency.
A few things to know:
- Market Based Pricing supports one frequency option. Enable exactly one billing frequency, then turn on the switch. While it's on, the other frequency options stay locked.
- While Market Based Pricing is on, the Trial switch stays off for that frequency.
Product details and image
Each paid membership is a real product in your store, so you control how it looks:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Sync product details with Shopify | When enabled, the product name and image are automatically synced and overwrite existing values in Shopify. When disabled, edit these fields in Shopify yourself — Toki won't update them. |
| Product Image | Upload a JPG, PNG, or GIF under 1MB. This is the image customers see. |
| Requires Selling Plan | Only sell this product with these purchase options — customers can't buy it without picking one of your membership plans. This switch applies to subscription frequencies, so it stays off while the Lifetime option is enabled. |
The membership page also shows a Product Id, Variant Id, and a Selling Plan Id for each frequency. The Product Id links straight to the product in your Shopify admin, and you can click the other IDs to copy them — handy when you're checking the product in Shopify or working with our support team.
