Review form settings

Every review group has its own review form. You decide what customers can include — a star rating, pros and cons, photos and videos — and you choose the wording of every label and button they see. The form opens from the Reviews module on your product pages, and Toki links each submission to the customer's matching order when it finds one.

Open the form settings

  1. Open Reviews.
  2. If you have more than one review group, click the group's tab.
  3. In the Settings card, click Edit.

For a new group, click Create group instead. Both open the same page. The settings in this article live in two cards: Submission and Widget. Click Save when you're done. Toki pushes the saved settings to your storefront in the background, so give the product page a moment to pick them up.

Where to place the Reviews module on your theme is covered in Install modules on your storefront, and its look in Design modules.

What customers can include

The Submission card controls which optional parts appear in the form.

SettingWhat it does
Allow ratingCustomers rate the product from 1 to 5 stars. When this is on, the rating is required.
Allow pros and consAdds two optional fields, Pros and Cons, up to 100 characters each.
Allow media attachmentsCustomers can upload photos and videos with their review.
Max media per reviewAppears when media is allowed. How many files one review can include, from 1 to 20. New groups start at 5.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Each switch also controls what shoppers see on published reviews. Turn off Allow pros and cons and existing pros and cons stay hidden; turn off Allow media attachments and existing photos and videos stay hidden.
  • With Allow rating off, reviews show no stars, and the storefront drops the rating filter and the rating sort options. Keep it on if you auto-approve by rating (see Review moderation) or export the group to Google Product Ratings.
  • Media uploads accept image and video files up to 15 MB each. The form shows the file count and size limits to the customer.

What every review includes

Regardless of the switches above, the form always asks for:

  • A headline (up to 100 characters).
  • The review text (up to 5,000 characters, with a live character count).
  • The customer's name, shown publicly with the review.

All three are required. If you've added custom questions to the group, they appear before or after these fields — see Custom review questions.

Customers sign in before they write a review. If a shopper clicks the review button while signed out, the sign-in window opens first and the form follows. Who can submit a review for which products is set in Review eligibility.

Text and labels

In the Widget card, click Text and labels to expand the wording fields. Each one has a default; the table shows where each text appears on your product page.

FieldDefaultWhere customers see it
Submit button textWrite A ReviewThe button in the Reviews module that opens the form. This is not the button inside the form, which always reads Submit.
Modal titleShare your thoughtsThe heading at the top of the form.
Rating field labelRate your experienceAbove the stars (only when rating is allowed).
Headline field labelAdd a headlineAbove the headline field.
Headline field placeholderSummarize your experienceInside the empty headline field.
Body field labelWrite a reviewAbove the review text field.
Body field placeholderTell us what you like or dislikeInside the empty review text field.

Every field needs a value. If you clear one and save, Toki restores the default for that field.

Other wording in the form — Pros, Cons, Your name, Submit, and the upload hints — comes from Toki's built-in text. To change it, use the Translations page (see Customize translations).

Incentivized review badge

The badge tells shoppers which reviews were rewarded. The Show incentivized review badge switch in the Widget card is on by default, and Toki recommends keeping it on.

When a review earns a reward from your rewards program — for example, points for an approved review — the review shows an Incentivized review badge next to the reviewer's name. Hovering the badge explains what the reviewer received:

RewardWhat shoppers read
PointsReceived loyalty points for submitting a review.
Discount or free shippingReceived a discount for submitting a review.
Free giftReceived a free product for submitting a review.
Any other rewardReceived a reward for submitting a review.

The badge appears only on reviews that actually earned a reward, so it never shows on a review that didn't. The switch only changes what shoppers see on your storefront: reviews that earned a reward are always marked as incentivized in your Google Product Ratings feed.

To reward reviews, create a review reward — see Creating rewards.

How a review is linked to an order

When a customer submits a review, Toki looks for their most recent order in your store that includes the product. Cancelled orders don't count. If it finds one:

  • The review shows a Verified buyer badge on your storefront, and shoppers can sort by Verified purchase.
  • On the Reviews page, the Order column and the Review details window show the order, with a link that opens it in your Shopify admin.
  • Toki records which variant the customer bought.
  • A country flag appears next to the reviewer's name, based on the order's shipping country.

Reviews without a matching order are still accepted. They simply carry no Verified buyer badge, and the flag reflects where the review was submitted from.

Each customer has one review per product in a group. If they submit the form again for the same product while their review is pending or approved, Toki updates that review instead of creating a second one, and its moderation status stays as it was.

What shoppers can do with published reviews

These work on their own, with no settings to configure:

  • Vote — each review asks "Was this review helpful?" with thumbs up and thumbs down counts. Voting requires signing in.
  • Search, filter, and sort — a search box, a star-rating filter, a With media toggle, and sorting by Highest rating, Lowest rating, Most recent, With media, or Verified purchase. The rating and media options only appear when the matching switch is on.
  • View media — clicking a photo or video opens it full-screen, with arrows to move between the review's files.
