Blacklist rules

A blacklist rule keeps a group of customers from receiving your program's perks at checkout, without changing anything else about their accounts. You pick one or more segments, and while the rule is active, the perks Toki applies automatically at checkout skip every customer in those segments. Use it to keep wholesale accounts or staff out of customer-only perks, or to pause a group's perks while you look into suspicious activity.

Open the Blacklist Rules page

  1. In the Toki app, open the Blacklist Rules page. If you don't see it, chat with us and we'll set it up with you.
  2. Type in Search blacklist rules to find a rule by name.
  3. Click a row, or click Edit, to open a rule.

The list shows 10 rules per page, newest first, and refreshes on its own every 30 seconds.

ColumnWhat it shows
NameThe rule's name.
StatusActive or Draft. Only active rules block anyone.
ActionEdit opens the rule.

Create a rule

A rule chooses from the segments you already have. If the group you want to block isn't a segment yet, create the segment first.

  1. On the Blacklist Rules page, click Create New Rule.
  2. Under Configuration, choose one or more Customer Segments. A customer who belongs to any of the selected segments is blocked.
  3. Under Settings, enter a Name. This is required.
  4. Set Status to Active to enforce the rule, or leave it as Draft to save it without enforcing it.
  5. Click Save in the bar at the top of the page. Click Discard to throw away unsaved changes instead.

After you save an active rule, Toki takes you to the rule's own page and starts updating the covered customers right away. The update runs in the background, so with large segments it can take a while before every customer is covered at checkout.

Rule settings

SettingWhat it does
NameRequired. How the rule appears in the list. Pick something you'll recognize later, such as "Wholesale accounts".
StatusActive enforces the rule. Draft saves it without enforcing it. New rules start as Draft.
Customer SegmentsThe segments to block. Choose as many as you need. A customer who belongs to any of them is blocked. A rule with no segments selected blocks no one.

To block a single customer, add them to a segment that only they belong to, then choose that segment in the rule.

How blocking works

  • An active rule covers the perks Toki applies at checkout. For a blocked customer, the tier discounts, free shipping, buy X get Y, and custom discounts that Toki adds to the cart on its own (see Automatic perks on the Loyalty page) are left out of their order, and subscription perks on a paid membership are skipped. Nothing else about their account changes.
  • Segment membership is live. Toki works out who is covered when you save a rule and refreshes the list every hour. If a customer joins one of the rule's segments later, Toki blocks them on the next refresh. If they leave the segment, Toki lifts the block the same way.
  • A customer covered by several active rules stays blocked until none of them apply.

Pause or stop a rule

  • To pause a rule without losing it, open it, set Status to Draft, and click Save. Toki starts lifting the block as soon as you save.
  • To turn it back on, set Status to Active and click Save.
  • To remove a rule for good, open it and click Delete, then confirm with Delete in the Delete blacklist rule dialog. This cannot be undone. The rule disappears from the list, and Toki lifts its block on the next hourly refresh.

Check whether a customer is blocked

Open the customer's member profile and look at the Segments card. If they belong to a segment used by an active rule, the rule covers them.
