Segment conditions

Conditions are the rules that decide who is in a segment. Toki checks your customers against them, adds the ones who qualify, and removes the ones who stop qualifying. You can combine several conditions with and / or, group them for more precise rules, and limit most of them to a time window such as "in the last 12 months."

Where you set conditions

  1. Click Segments in the left navigation.
  2. Click Create New Segment, or click Edit next to an existing segment.
  3. Scroll to the Unlock Conditions card. A new segment starts with one Store credit balance condition.
  4. When you're done, click Save in the bar at the top of the page.

Membership tiers use the same condition editor. If you're building a tier, see Tier conditions and member limit.

Add, change, and remove conditions

  • Each condition starts with a Condition type selector. Pick a type and a one-line description appears under it, along with the fields for that type.
  • To add a condition, click the button below your last condition. It's labeled with the current connector (OR or AND), and its hover text reads Add new condition. New conditions start as Store credit balance.
  • To remove a condition, click Delete condition. The button appears once you have more than one condition at that level.

Combine conditions with and / or

Between conditions you'll see a divider with a small or / and selector.

ConnectorWho qualifies
orCustomers who meet at least one of the conditions. New segments start with or.
andCustomers who meet every condition.

One connector applies to all conditions at the same level. To mix both in one rule, add a nested group:

  1. Set a Condition type to Nested condition group. A Nested Conditions Group box appears with one condition inside.
  2. Click Add nested condition to add more conditions to the group. The group has its own or / and selector, separate from the top level.
  3. Click Delete group to remove the whole group.

You can nest one level deep: the top level plus groups of regular conditions inside it. That covers rules like "(spent $500 and placed 10 orders) or has the VIP tag."

Activity

FieldWhat it does
ActivityThe activity the customer must complete.
TimesHow many times they must complete it. A customer qualifies at this number or more. Default: 1.

For activities that collect answers, such as forms and quizzes, an Answer matching setting appears when the activity includes single-choice, multiple-choice, or date questions:

  • Any answer — every completion counts.
  • Specific answers — only completions with the answers you pick count. Under Select specific answers, click Add filter next to a question in Available questions, then choose the Expected answer, Expected answers, or Expected date. Between questions, an and / or selector sets whether the customer must match all of the answers or any one of them. Click Remove to drop a question.

Changing the selected activity clears any answer filters.

Store credit conditions

Four condition types look at a customer's points, each from a different angle:

Condition typeWhat it measures
Store credit balanceWhat the customer can spend right now: credits earned minus credits spent.
Cumulative store creditEverything the customer has earned, whether or not they have spent it. This is the usual choice for tier progress.
Maintained store creditThe highest balance the customer has ever held.
Redeemed store creditHow many points the customer has redeemed.

Enter the value in Amount. Toki shows it in points and in your store currency. A Points selector appears only when your program has more than one points balance to choose from.

Manual balance adjustments affect Cumulative store credit in two ways:

  • A debit with As penalty checked lowers the customer's cumulative total.
  • A credit with Non-Tier Points checked is left out of the cumulative total.

See Balance adjustments for how to make those adjustments.

Spend and orders

Condition typeFields
Spent amountSpend amount in your store currency. Customers qualify at this amount or more.
Number of ordersExpression (the comparison) and Orders count.
Referral spent amountExpression (the comparison) and Referral spend amount in your store currency — the total spent by the shoppers this customer referred.

Customer lists and tags

Condition typeFields
Specific customersCustomer email list — enter one email per line.
Customer tagsCustomer tags — enter one Shopify tag per line. Then set Strategy: AND requires every tag you listed, OR requires at least one of them. Default: OR.

Program and membership

Joined program has no extra fields — only a time window. Its first time-window option reads At any time since joining the program, so you can build segments like "joined in the last 30 days."

Paid membership shows a dropdown where you pick one of your paid memberships. When a segment belongs to a paid membership tier, its Paid Membership condition is managed by that membership, and the editor shows "You cannot edit it directly." Manage it from the membership instead — see Paid memberships.

Klaviyo segment

This condition type appears once Klaviyo is connected under Integrations. Pick a Klaviyo segment or list in Klaviyo Segment. Toki syncs your Klaviyo segments and lists once per hour, so if you just created one in Klaviyo, check back after the next sync.

Time in segment

This condition has one setting: the time window. It matches customers who have been in the segment for the time you set. To require a minimum stay, choose Older than and enter a number of days, months, or years — for example, Older than 3 months means the customer entered the segment at least three months ago.

This is the condition behind "time in tier" requirements. Pair it with other conditions on a membership tier to reward customers who keep their status over time, rather than a single spending spike.

Time windows

Conditions marked "Yes" in the table above include a time-window selector. It defaults to Over all time.

OptionWhat it counts
Over all timeEverything, with no date restriction.
In the lastThe last N days, months, or years.
Between datesAnything between the two dates you pick.
Since dateAnything from the date you pick onward.
Until dateAnything up to the date you pick.
Older thanAnything from more than N days, months, or years ago.
Since last yearAnything since January 1 of last year.
Since join or cutoffAnything since the customer joined your program or since N days, months, or years ago — whichever is more recent.
Since annual dateAnything since the most recent occurrence of the Month and Day you pick. For example, January 1 counts from this year's January 1 once it has passed, and from last year's until then.
Since joining the Loyalty programEverything since the customer joined your loyalty program.

For Joined program, the window applies to the join date itself, so In the last 30 days means "joined in the last 30 days."

Comparisons

Number of orders, Redeemed store credit, and Referral spent amount include an Expression selector:

OptionWho qualifies
More thanAbove the number you enter.
Less thanBelow the number you enter.
More than or equal toAt or above the number you enter. Default.
Less than or equal toAt or below the number you enter.
Equal toExactly the number you enter.

Every other numeric condition qualifies customers at the number you enter or more.

When Toki checks conditions

Toki rechecks who belongs in a segment whenever you save its conditions. You can also run a check yourself from the segment's members view with Reevaluate Segment — see Segments. Klaviyo membership follows the hourly Klaviyo sync.
