Create gift cards with Shopify Flow

Toki adds a Create Gift Card action to Shopify Flow. Drop it into any Flow workflow and Toki issues a gift card to the customer, creates the matching gift card in Shopify, and emails the code — all on its own, the moment the trigger fires. Set it up once, and welcome gifts, apology credits, or milestone rewards go out without you lifting a finger.

Before you start

  • Toki is installed in your store. See Installing Toki.
  • Shopify Flow is installed in your Shopify admin. Flow is Shopify's own automation app: you pick a trigger, add conditions if you want, and choose the actions that run. New to it? Start with Shopify's Flow guide.

Shopify Flow is separate from the Workflows page inside Toki. This article covers Shopify Flow only.

Add the action to a workflow

  1. In your Shopify admin, open Shopify Flow and create a new workflow, or edit an existing one.
  2. Pick the trigger that should hand out the gift card — for example a new customer account, a canceled order, or a customer joining a segment.
  3. Add an action and choose Create Gift Card from Toki Loyalty.
  4. Fill in the action's fields (see below).
  5. Turn the workflow on.

Action fields

FieldWhat it does
Initial BalanceThe gift card's starting value, in your store's currency. Required. Decimals are fine, like 12.50.
Customer IDThe Shopify customer who receives the gift card. Insert the customer ID from your trigger — the field shows {{customer.id}} as an example.
EmailThe recipient's email address. Use it when your trigger gives you an email rather than a customer — the field shows {{email}} as an example.

Fill in Customer ID or Email — at least one is needed. If you fill in both, Toki looks up the customer by Customer ID first and falls back to Email.

What happens when the workflow runs

  1. Toki finds the customer by the Customer ID or Email you passed in. If the customer isn't in your loyalty program yet, Toki adds them automatically.
  2. Toki creates the gift card with the Initial Balance you set and generates a code for it.
  3. Toki creates the matching gift card in Shopify, so the code works at checkout like any Shopify gift card. If Toki is connected to more than one of your stores, the code works in each of them.
  4. Toki emails the customer the code right away, using the Gift Card Subject and Gift Card Template from your store's email settings. See Gift card delivery and emails to edit that email.

A couple of things to know:

  • The customer needs an email address on file to receive the gift card email. If they don't have one, open the card from their member profile and set a recipient in Manage delivery — see Manage issued gift cards.
  • When Assign customer to gift card is on, Toki attaches the gift card to the customer in Shopify, and Shopify sends its own notification instead of Toki's email — one message, not two. See Gift card settings.

Find gift cards created by Flow

Gift cards from Flow aren't attached to a gift card product, so the member's profile is where you'll find them:

  1. Open Members and open the customer.
  2. Go to the Gift Cards tab.

The card appears in the Gift Cards table with its code, balance, and delivery time. From there you can update the balance, manage delivery, or check where the card was spent — see Manage issued gift cards.

Ideas for what to automate

  • Welcome gifts — a small gift card when a customer creates an account.
  • Birthday rewards — a gift card on the customer's birthday.
  • Apology credits — a gift card after a canceled order or a return.
  • Referral thank-yous — a gift card for customers who refer friends.
  • Milestones — a gift card when a customer passes a spending threshold or an anniversary.
  • Review incentives — a gift card after a customer leaves a product review.
  • VIP perks — a gift card for customers who enter a high-value segment.
